Weitek reduces price for SPARC POWER UP; award-winning chip from Weitek offers high-performance upgrade and a new lower price.

:WWTK WWTK Who Wants to Know? ) announced today that prices for the award-winning SPARC (Scalable Performance ARChitecture) A family of RISC CPUs from Sun that runs mostly under Sun's Solaris, but also under Linux and BSD operating systems. After development began in the mid-1980s by David Patterson of the University of California at Berkeley and Bill  POWER UP upgrade chip will be reduced by as much as 20%.

The retail price of the chip, which was $995, is now $795, a reduction of 20%. The price of the upgrade kit, which includes the processor upgrade, plus all the tools required to install the new processor, is now $995. This represents a 17% reduction over the old kit price of $1,200. Discounts are available for volume purchasers. The new prices are effective April 15, 1995.
