Weight loss winner--healthy fats. (American Running Association).

If you struggle to keep your weight down, here's a twist--eat more fat. It is true that controlling calories and reducing fat while exercising regularly are clearly the keys to successful weight loss and weight control. To lose weight, calories burned must exceed calories consumed and to maintain weight, energy must be balanced on average. However, your efforts may benefit from including more healthy fats in your diet. A recent study compared a standard low-fat diet low-fat diet A diet low in fats, especially saturated fats, which has a positive effect on arthritis, CA, ASHD, DM, HTN, obesity, and strokes. See Diet, Low-fat snack; Cf Animal fat, High-fat diet.  to a moderate-fat Mediterranean diet Mediterranean diet Nutrition A diet that differs by country, characterized by ↑ consumption of olive oil, complex carbohydrates, vegetables, ↓ red meat. See Diet, Mediterranean diet pyramid. Cf Affluent diet.  that included fats such as olive oil olive oil, pale yellow to greenish oil obtained from the pulp of olives by separating the liquids from solids. Olive oil was used in the ancient world for lighting, in the preparation of food, and as an anointing oil for both ritual and cosmetic purposes.  and nuts. The two diets included the same number of daily calories.

After 18 months, 31 out of 50 subjects from the moderate-fat group and 30 out of 51 in the low-fat group were available for measurements. The moderate-fat group lost, on average, 9.02 pounds of body weight, reduced their body mass index by 1.6 and waist measurements by 2.76 inches while the low-fat group gained 6.38 pounds, 1.4 Body Mass Index, and 1.04 inches around the middle. The authors concluded that a moderate-fat diet is more satisfying, allowing participants to stick to the program with greater success. Healthy fats have the additional benefit of contributing to heart healthy lipid profiles lipid profile,

Before you add on additional, healthy fat, make sure you subtract extra calories from your usual diet or you will gain weight.
