Wedgewood Pharmacy Now Compounds Implantable Cisplatin Beads Using Matrix III Under Exclusive License from Royer Animal Health.

 and medical writer, cisplatin frequently is prescribed by equine veterinarians as a chemotherapy drug to treat equine skin tumors such as sarcoids, spindle-cell tumors, squamous-cell carcinoma and melanoma.

Cisplatin beads using the Matrix III drug-delivery technology are 1.6mg each and dispensed three beads per vial for $75. Each of the spherical beads is about 3mm in diameter.

In common veterinary practice, cisplatin is injected directly into tumors in an emulsion of sterile sesame oil. Using the implantable bead-form of cisplatin may reduce the veterinarian's exposure to the highly toxic medication, compared with the injection emulsion, while providing local therapy.
