Webster finishes on top.

Byline: From Register-Guard and news service reports

OKLAHOMA CITY Oklahoma City (1990 pop. 444,719), state capital, and seat of Oklahoma co., central Okla., on the North Canadian River; inc. 1890. The state's largest city, it is an important livestock market, a wholesale, distribution, industrial, and financial center, and a farm  - Shane Webster would not be denied.

The Oregon senior, wrestling at 184 pounds, stayed off the mat and then took down Minnesota's Roger Kish midway through the third round to beat Kish 3-2 and win the school's first individual NCAA NCAA

wrestling title since 1969 on Saturday.

Webster, seeded fifth, beat three of the top four seeds, including the second-seeded Kish in the final, to win the title.

"This moment was something I've been working for my whole life, ever since I started wrestling at 7 years old," Webster said. "I can't even describe how I feel right now."

The score was tied at 1-1 when Webster made his winning move. After Kish grabbed his legs, Webster got away, then got behind Kish and scored the two-point takedown Takedown

Webster held on from there. Kish earned a point with an escape with 30 seconds remaining in the match to close to within 3-2, but Webster kept him from scoring again.

"I knew I had that little bit of a lead, and I knew neither one of us had riding time, so I just tried to stay in a position where he couldn't get any points off me," Webster said. "He wrestled somewhat differently than I was expecting, but I did the best I could and scored just enough to win."

Oregon coach Chuck Kearney said Webster was a worthy winner.

"We are really excited for Shane; this was the perfect ending to his college career," Kearney said. "He kept himself focused all tournament long."

Joey Bracamonte lost his consolation match 15-10 to Edinboro's Deonte Penn before coming back to beat Iowa State's Travis Paulson 4-3 in the fifth-place match.

"Joey wrestled a great tournament, and we don't want him to get lost in the shuffle," Kearney said. "He was solid all weekend."

Oregon finished in 22nd place with 33 points for the meet, the best finish for the Ducks since finishing 21st in 1997.

Oklahoma State won its fourth straight national title, and 34th overall, with 122 1/2 points.

``I looked up and saw three seconds left and I went to my crowd after that,'' Hendricks said.

Churella, who had taken a 7-4 lead with a four-point move at the end of the second period, complained, but to no avail.

Even in the interview room, Hendricks hadn't settled down.
