Webinar Explains Smoother Speed Control Using the New BiSS Serial Protocol.

CHICAGO -- Danaher Industrial Controls Group (DICG DICG Danaher Industrial Controls Group ) announced a new technical webinar on the BiSS serial protocol for absolute encoder A hardware device or software that assigns a code to represent data. See encode.

1. (algorithm, hardware) encoder - Any program, circuit or algorithm which encodes.

Example usages: "MPEG encoder", "NTSC encoder", "RealAudio encoder".
2.
communications. BiSS (Bidirectional The ability to move, transfer or transmit in both directions.  Synchronous Refers to events that are synchronized, or coordinated, in time. For example, the interval between transmitting A and B is the same as between B and C, and completing the current operation before the next one is started are considered synchronous operations. Contrast with asynchronous.  Serial Interface) is the newest and fastest encoder communications protocol Hardware and software standards that govern data transmission between computers. The term "protocol" is very generic and is used for hundreds of different communications methods. A protocol may define the packet structure of the data transmitted or the control commands that manage the . It was designed to take full advantage of the higher precision of absolute encoders and provide improved positioning precision and control response, and extremely smooth speed control, even at low speeds. Unlike proprietary protocols, BiSS doesn't lock users into a particular brand of encoders at prices set on the supplier's terms.

The webinar covers everything that engineers need to know in order to integrate BiSS-based encoders with motors and drives, including wiring, clocking, diagnostics, registers, and comparison to other leading protocols. There is no cost for the webinar but online registration is required at www.feedbackdevices.com/biss.

The BiSS webinar is part of a campaign launched recently by Danaher Industrial Controls called the "Campaign for Absolute Freedom," which seeks to accelerate the adoption of open protocols for absolute encoders. The campaign website, www.feedbackdevices.com/biss, allows engineers to petition drive manufacturers to support the BiSS protocol on their drives.

BiSS runs faster than current alternatives, and it allows for remote encoder diagnostics. BiSS can be configured for point-to-point use, with one controller (master) and one encoder (slave), or with one master and multiple slaves. This can significantly reduce wiring expense. Unlike analog protocols, the BiSS is all digital, avoiding the need for A/D converters (Analog/Digital converter) A device that converts continuously varying analog signals from instruments and sensors that monitor conditions, such as sound, movement and temperature into binary code for the computer.  and allowing long cable lengths.
