Web portals.

Web portals See portal.  allow access to both provider and patient data. Many hospitals already employ this technology, and recent improvements in some physician billing software programs will allow many physician's offices to take advantage of the same technology. Patients will be able to request appointments online--or even schedule themselves. This software will also allow patients to view their account balances and pay them online. Patients will be able to view their current records and request older records.

Web portals offer potential cost savings for medical practices because patients will no longer have to contact offices personally in order to make certain transactions. In addition, giving patients the capability of paying off balances online should improve office collections (figure).

As you consider your future technology needs, consider Web portals as another opportunity to decrease your overhead while improving your office's efficiency.
