Web firm strikes chord with business.

Start small and grow at an even pace. Contract out more.

These are the business philosophies of a young, aggressive company that is experiencing unprecedented growth. For Mitch The name Mitch can mean:
  • A nickname for the name Mitchell, descending from the name Michael meaning "Who is like God"
  • Hurricane Mitch.
  • Mitch, a character in A Streetcar Named Desire.
  • Mitch, a character played by Luke Wilson in Old School (film).
Ross, these are words that he repeats to himself as his company grows by leaps and bounds.

"We've grown a lot faster than we thought. People want to work with us," says Ross, owner of Off Road Productions, a Sudbury-based multimedia Web design firm. Ross maintains a small office staff and contracts out his creative and Web design work to local professionals. His emphasis on deliberately keeping his business small and producing a quality, customer-oriented service and product has made local creative people come to him, not the other way around. In fact, Ross says he is having problems finding work for all the contractors who want to work for him.

Ross, a musician, studied music at Cambrian College Cambrian College is a college of applied arts and technology in Greater Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He worked as a broadcaster and copywriter for two Sudbury radio stations and did production work for others. When he was approached to do audio work for Web sites, the opportunity to blend his musical composition talents with modern technology hit him like a ton of bricks, he recalls.

Deliberately staying small in terms of office staff, says Ross, is his strategy for success. Most of his competitors, he maintains, have full-time office staff. This negatively affects their bottom line, he says. Keeping his overhead costs overhead costs

Ross applies his musical talents to his Web sites. From a short and simple two-second jingle to a digitally recorded full-length song. Ross incorporates audio tracks into Web sites to make them more enticing to visitors. He also incorporates animation, graphics, photography and other multimedia elements into his Web sites.

A Web site without music "is like having a McDonald's commercial without a jingle. It's not as memorable," Ross says.

Music, he says, adds an element of excitement and interest. It helps customers remember you and what you do. As local businesses become more attuned at·tune

Off Road Productions has gone to great lengths to get the right sound for companies. Ross says that he had a company contract him to develop a multimedia Web site with audio for a fishing guide. Ross used the sound of an old-fashioned fishing rod on the site to enhance the user experience.

More recently, he has been focusing on expanding his market share in the area through sales calls.
