Wealth Building Journal: A Day-by-Day Journey to a Brighter Future, a Better You: a journey to building wealth: your day-by-day guide to prosperity is a pen stroke (and a bookstore) away. (B.E. Books).

Our Managing Editor Kenneth Meeks remembers sitting in his friend's kitchen 10 years ago bantering with him over money matters--and their lack of cash. At the time, Meeks owed the IRS An abbreviation for the Internal Revenue Service, a federal agency charged with the responsibility of administering and enforcing internal revenue laws.  more than $3,000 in back taxes; his friend, Joe, owed a little less than $1,500 to the government, as well. His friend's credit was ruined because of late payments, and Meeks' creditworthiness Creditworthiness

Both men were freelance writers trying to make a living from their craft.

"When I [start] making money, I'm chartering a jet and traveling around the world, just me and my wife," Joe smiled.

Joe's wife looked up from the refrigerator. "What about the children?" she asked. Joe paused a moment in thought, and then turned toward Meeks. "Feel like baby-sitting for a month or two?" he asked.

"You ain't going nowhere," Meeks answered. "I know what you got in your bank account--the same as me. Nothing! The only place around the world you're going to is on a basketball court."

At the time, Meeks and his friend had never had money, and until that very day thought they never would. That's why Meeks remembers that summer day as clearly as he does going to the grocery store the day before yesterday. It was the day Meeks pledged to break the cycle of living from paycheck to paycheck. He took control of his finances.

Traditionally, our community is always striving to catch up when it comes to building wealth, but Meeks vowed that he would not only catch up but also excel in securing his financial future. And though he didn't have a family at the time, he knew he had to prepare.
