SILENT Scream is the fourth instalment in the Above Suspicion franchise. But if you're like me, you'll have difficulty remembering which crime series is which from one year to the next.

This is the one based on Lynda La Plante's best-selling novels, which stars Kelly Reilly as the ambitious, flamehaired DI Anna Travis.

It also stars Ciaran Hinds as DCS (1) See also DSC.

(2) Digital Cross-connect System) A network switching and grooming device used by telecom carriers. See digital cross-connect.
James Langton, the boss who Anna is presumably pre·sum·a·ble
adj.
That can be presumed or taken for granted; reasonable as a supposition: presumable causes of the disaster.
thinking of each morning as she shimmies into her killer heels, tight skirt and smudgy eye-shadow all ready for another day of crime-fighting and taking credit for other people's work.

Langton is looking particularly grumpy this year. He's been passed over for promotion and reckons one of his team must have grassed him up about a cock-up on an earlier case.

So now he has to stand by and congratulate the much younger Sam Power (Ray Fearon) as he leap-frogs over him to the post of Commander.

We can remember Fearon when he was a mechanic at Kevin Webster's garage in Coronation Street, so his rise through the ranks seems positively meteoric.

Langton must settle for heading up the investigation into the murder of young actress Amanda Delaney who was as famous for her off-screen bed-hopping as for her other talents.

La Plante was an actress herself before she became a writer, so she's particularly at home writing this film within a film. Amanda is played by Joanna Vanderham (Cathy in Martina Cole's The Runaway) and from the opening scene of her being a drama queen on set, you wouldn't be surprised if the director murdered her himself with his bare hands.

The real explanation though, is bound to be more complicated than that.

WE LOVE REAL LIFE

COPPERS C4, 9pm

FROM fictional detectives in Above Suspicion to CID Cid or Cid Campeador (sĭd, Span. thēth kämpāäthōr`) [Span.,=lord conqueror], d. 1099, Spanish soldier and national hero, whose real name was Rodrigo (or Ruy) Díaz de Vivar.  officers in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire - the second series of this fly-on-the-wall documentary shows the job in a less glamorous light but there are scenes where the dialogue is almost identical.

Cops and robbers for grown-ups is how one detective constable here describes the job. And as we sit in on interviews as a repeat offender is questioned about burglaries, it does feel like a game - but one where the playing field is tilted heavily in the defendant's favour.

There's a shocking case tonight of a paedophile paedophile or US pedophile

Noun 1. paedophile - an adult who is sexually attracted to children
pedophile
who has sexually assaulted a 10-year-old while on leave from prison.

"You have this image of a heinous, horrible monster on the loose," says DC Mark Petrovic. "By the time they come in, they're just a sad individual."

The unique relationship between detectives and criminals is one of the most fascinating aspects of this film.

WE LOVE DRAMA

SHAMELESS C4, 10pm

THIS show and bad language have always been firm friends. But there are so many F-words in the season's special two-part opener it's as though Gordon Ramsay wrote the script.

The Chatsworth Estate residents have good reason to be all sweary - half find themselves evicted from their homes.

It's part of Operation New Start, a multi-agency crackdown on benefit cheats and other bad eggs.

Considering most of Frank's neighbours don't know the meaning of an honest day's work, or what taxes actually are, they will be busy people.

Especially as the newly homeless refuse to go down without a fight.

With many seeking shelter at The Jockey, they unite and declare war on New Start and its front woman, Carmen Kenaway, played by the brilliant Morwenna Banks. The Chatsworth war continues tomorrow.

But the only way to do this - and keep Jai out of prison as well - is by appealing to Cain's better nature.

It'll be tough for her. Does he even have one? We'll find out tonight when Cain visits Charity with a surprising offer.

WELL there's nothing like a direct question, and you don't get to be the landlady of a back-street northern boozer by beating about the bush.

Which is exactly what Frank will be wondering by the end of the episode.

Oops. So much for discretion.

YOU don't often get laughs out of an undertaker, but the chap who turns up to arrange Pat's funeral has Carol Jackson spluttering into her tea. This is a stand-out episode, beautifully written by Christopher Reason, that finds Carol and David struggling to finance Pat's send-off, and finding it even harder with their feelings for one another.
