WaveMark Technologies Announces the WaveMark Mercury Embedded Printer Controller.

Business/Technology Editors

BURLINGTON, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Feb. 22, 2000

Turnkey solution yields dramatic efficiencies for OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) The rebranding of equipment and selling it. The term initially referred to the company that made the products (the "original" manufacturer), but eventually became widely used to refer to the organization that buys the products and  developers

of printers and copiers for office market.

WaveMark Technologies, developer of high-performance laser printer controller designs, today announced the availability of the WaveMark Mercury Embedded Printer Controller. The Mercury controller enables printer OEMs to develop high-performance color and high-speed monochrome printers in an extremely efficient and cost-effective manner. A low-cost, turnkey solution, the Mercury controller dramatically reduces the time needed to bring a printer or other digital imaging system to market. Along with the Mercury controller, OEMs can take advantage of WaveMark's world-class source engineering resources to further shorten product development lead-time and reduce development costs.

"Laser printers are now expected to handle complex graphics and sophisticated color, especially when printing from the Web. These pages, laden with graphics and color, place huge demands on the printer controller, usually making it the bottleneck that slows printing significantly," explained Bob Downs, President of WaveMark Technologies.

"This is precisely where the WaveMark Mercury can turn the situation around and dramatically boost printing speed," said Downs. With the Mercury controller, OEMs can also develop departmental photocopiers that serve as high-performance network printers.

The WaveMark Mercury controller design is based on an IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries)  PowerPC 405GP embedded processor A CPU chip used in a system other than a general purpose workstation, desktop or laptop computer. A chip that is custom designed for a specific application rather than a general-purpose chip such as a microprocessor. . The Mercury controller incorporates the PrintFast ASIC as a build option; thus the same basic design can be used to reach multiple market segments and price points.

"WaveMark's experience with the IBM PowerPC architecture exemplifies the scalability of the architecture, providing a seamless transition from one product generation to the next. IBM is committed to providing PowerPC processors General-purpose PowerPC processors

in the imaging marketplace," said Wendy Arnette, program director, PowerPC marketing, IBM Microelectronics. "We think that the highly-integrated PowerPC 405GP is well suited for imaging devices such as the WaveMark Mercury printer controller."

The PrintFast accelerator permits faster printing of complex documents and color using Xionics Document Technologies IPS Page Description Languages, including PostScript 3 and PCL (Printer Command Language) The page description language for HP LaserJet printers. It has become a de facto standard used in many printers and typesetters. PCL Level 5, introduced with the LaserJet III in 1990, also supports Compugraphic's Intellifont scalable fonts. 6. The Mercury base design can be modified to incorporate additional capabilities and options to meet an OEM's specific market requirements. The customization can be performed either by the customer or by WaveMark.

Using the highly integrated PowerPC 405GP processor running at 200Mhz and 252 dmips, WaveMark expects to be able to drive printers at an excess of 60 PPM. With the addition of the WaveMark PrintFast Acceleration ASIC, this performance will be even further extended.
