Wasted effort? (Editorial).

It's hard to write about the effects of the murderous actions of September 11 without coming across as trivializing the magnitude of what happened, and we really won't have a handle on that for quite some time. It's hard to imagine someone who hasn't been directly affected. Our deepest sympathies go out to those who have really suffered because of this.

I am somewhat amazed at how a small group of murderers can disrupt world commerce on the scale they did, and set up a ripple effect ripple effect Epidemiology See Signal event.  that will be felt for quite some time. It's too early to tell how the events of September 11 have impacted the rubber industry. They have already forced the cancellation of the International Rubber Study Group's annual meeting as well as Global Rubber Conference 2001, a joint meeting sponsored by Bayer and Rubber World Magazine.

To say that this was a big disappointment is an understatement. The planning and preparation had been going on for a year, since the first successful GRC GRC Greece (ISO Country code)

in 2000. The work done by the people at Bayer and Rubber World involved in GRC 2001 had resulted in one of the strongest programs of this type that I have seen. Joe Day, chairman and chief executive of Freudenberg-NOK, was to be the keynote speaker, and the list of speakers included: Don Shea, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. GRC 2001 was scheduled for September 13 and 14. There were already people at the site in Sarnia, Ontario for pre-conference arrangements. It was a tough decision to cancel, especially on such short notice.

It's a real shame that the efforts of those involved in assembling this program didn't come to fruition. Hopefully their work has not been totally in vain. As I write, GRC 2002 is being planned, and if you were at the first one in 2000, you can expect an equally strong program.
