[ILLUSTRATION OMITTED] Over the last three-quarters of a century, we've reviewed all sorts of books, from team techniques to sport psychology to coaching manuals to encyclopedias in every sport from archery archery, sport of shooting with bow and arrow, an important military and hunting skill before the introduction of gunpowder. England's Charles II fostered archery as sport, establishing in 1673 the world's oldest continuous archery tournament, the Ancient Scorton to wherever the alphabet ends. But this is the first love story we've ever included. It's the story of Ithaca's legendary football coach, Jim Butterfield, by the person most qualified to write it, his wife Lois. It's a terrific tale about a coach's love for his sport, his players and, not incidentally, the woman with whom he shared it all. Lois Butterfield's hymn to him is beautifully written and chock full of remembrances from Jim's players and coaching colleagues. Jim was the head coach at Ithaca for 27 years, compiling a 206-71 (.743) record, which is even more impressive when you realize his Bombers split the first 58 games of his career there. Lois regrets that she didn't get it done soon enough to allow Jim to hold the book before he died. If that's so, it's the only thing she didn't get exactly right.--B.W.
