Washington Post, CBS News Early Show receive AOPO Crystal Heart Awards.


The Washington Post and CBS News, The Early Show have been named the 2006 recipients of the Association of Organ Procurement Organizations (AOPO) Crystal Heart Award. The award is given annually to national print and broadcast media for outstanding reporting on organ and tissue donation and transplantation.

The Washington Post was recognized for an article written by Susan Levine headlined "Fate Reveals Fallen Officer's Gift." The article chronicled the death of Craig McBride, a Washington D.C policeman who died on duty and became an organ and tissue donor. The article, which focused on how McBride's donation touched the life of another officer in his precinct, ran on page one of the paper.

CBS News, The Early Show was honored for a segment on the American Hero which aired on February 2, 2005. The piece focused on Kendall Ciessemier, a two-time liver transplant recipient, from Wheaton, IL, who raises money to for AIDS orphans in Africa and donates through World Vision.
