Washington Group Gets Notice to Proceed on Design Phase Of San Diego Freeway Project.

Washington Group International announced today that it has received a limited notice to proceed on the approximately $11 million design portion of an $85 million design-build contract for the northern segment of the public-private State Route 125 South expressway in San Diego, Calif.

Washington Group was awarded two design-build contracts last year by California Transportation Ventures, Inc. (CTV), general partner of the San Diego Expressway L.P., a limited partnership principally owned by Parsons Brinckerhoff and Egis Projects. Design of the northern segment will begin immediately, with construction notice to proceed expected later this year.

San Diego Expressway L.P. has a franchise agreement with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) to develop the public-private State Route 125 South that will serve the southeast San Diego area. The project includes a public-funded 3.5-mile-long section from State Route 54 to San Miguel Road on the north end, a 9.5-mile-long toll road from San Miguel Road to Otay Mesa Road near the U.S.-Mexico border on the south end, and reconstruction and expansion of a section of existing State Route 54 where it intersects with the new route.

Design and construction of the toll road section will begin once financing is completed. Washington Group's design-build contracts include both the public-funded section and the toll-road section.
