Brief conflict in 2003 between Iraq and a combined force of troops largely from the U.S. and Great Britain; and a subsequent U.S.
veteran Matthew Sepi shot and killed Sharon Jackson and wounded Keven Ratcliff with a rifle he was carrying. On September 23, prosecutors dropped the charges of murder and attempted murder against him, saying he fired in self-defense.

The shooting happened, according to an article in the Las Vegas Sun The Las Vegas Sun is one of Las Vegas, Nevada's two daily newspapers. It is owned by the Greenspun family and is affiliated with Greenspun Media Group.

The paper was published in the afternoons on weekdays from 1990-2005.
, after Sepi had gone to buy beer at a 7-Eleven store. He was on his way back home, cutting through an alley, when Jackson and Ratcliff apparently yelled something at him, telling him to get out of the alley. Sepi indicated to police that he then saw Ratcliff fire at him, and so he pulled out a rifle he was carrying and began shooting back. When questioned by police about why he was carrying a rifle, Sepi told them that an unknown person had threatened him with a knife in the alley the previous night.

Sepi pled guilty to felony possession of a dangerous weapon and a gross misdemeanor of possession of a concealed weapon concealed weapon n. a weapon, particularly a handgun, which is kept hidden on one's person, or under one's control (in a glove compartment or under a car seat). , but these charges will be dropped if Sepi completes a drug and alcohol program and a combat trauma program. In giving Sepi the chance to have the charges against him dropped, the prosecutor took into consideration the fact that Sepi had served in Iraq, participating in many operations against insurgents Insurgents, in U.S. history, the Republican Senators and Representatives who in 1909–10 rose against the Republican standpatters controlling Congress, to oppose the Payne-Aldrich tariff and the dictatorial power of House speaker Joseph G.
