War bonds ...

Judging by all the love and respect that a ballplayer named Barry Bonds Barry Lamar Bonds (born July 24 1964 in Riverside, California) is a left fielder for the San Francisco Giants of Major League Baseball. He is the son of former major league All-Star Bobby Bonds, the godson of Hall of Famer Willie Mays, and a distant cousin of Hall of Famer Reggie  has never inspired as a player in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh (pĭts`bərg), city (1990 pop. 369,879), seat of Allegheny co., SW Pa., at the confluence of the Allegheny and the Monongahela rivers, which there form the Ohio River; inc. 1816.  and San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden , we have always believed that he has had the worst P.R. support in Major League Baseball "MLB" and "Major Leagues" redirect here.  Ruth, we realize that BB doesn't need a press agent to make him look bad. He can do it all by himself.

O.K., so he walks a couple of times a game, he hit 73 home runs one year, and he is considered the only ballplayer to average 40 homers and 40 stolen bases a season (he actually did it just once). But does that put him in the same league as the Bambino?

Not even close. First of all, Babe Ruth, at ages 19 to 25, was a pitcher (and a great one). Had he been a fulltime player, he probably would have wound up with 150 more home runs. Just look at the accompanying stats and then tell us how a Barry Bonds could compare with the Babe--as a ballplayer, a personality, and a statesman for his sport.
