Wanted: 2,000 men: Noam Gonick talks about his outrageous film Hey, Happy! in which a wild sex quest and a rolling porn wagon lead to love.

"One of the deleted scenes is the best barfing shot you'll ever see," filmmaker Noam Gonick says proudly. He's talking about his first feature, 2001's Hey, Happy! which is set to make its DVD DVD: see digital versatile disc.

It's a gay romantic comedy about a young DJ named Sabu (Jeremie Yuen) who works at an open-air porn shop on wheels--and who's also working on his life's mission of having sex with 2,000 different men. Sabu believes that by doing so, he'll bring on an apocalyptic flood, and he has his eyes set on Happy (Craig Aftanis)--a UFO-obsessed virgin--as Mr. 2,000. There's more: Bad guy Spanky (Clayton Godson god·son

It is, thanks to Gonick's defiantly strange approach to narrative. "I like to think of it as the continued adventures of The Little Rascals," he says. He also deals in visual non sequiturs, visionary Cinema-Scope cinematography cinematography: see motion picture photography.

Film Threat, the online guide to all kinds of weird movies, accused Gonick of being high while writing the script and likened the film to "seeing photos of yourself at a party doing dumb things," charges to which the 30-year-old Canadian filmmaker and self-described "slut" will only respond, "Oh, don't think that it's not like that for me too. [But] mostly I was concerned with the kinds of gay narratives that were being told and the kinds of lifestyles that were being whitewashed. I'm ambivalent about [the mainstreaming of gay culture]. I wanted to reinform a new generation about the pleasure and power and joy of excess. Maybe sleeping with 2,000 guys will cause the apocalypse, but maybe that's not such a bad thing."

As part of Winnipeg, Canada's film community, Gonick is often compared to fellow Winnipeg native (and maker of unusual films himself) Guy Maddin. In fact, Gonick directed a documentary about Maddin in 1997 called Waiting for" Twilight and is quick to credit both Maddin and queer director Bruce La Brace as influences. He spent the past year writing a script about gang wars and directing a Canadian documentary TV series called Kink kink

"So now it's going to be in Blockbuster and it will find its suburban basement-midnight movie crowd. And on the DVD you can freeze-frame the penises. Hopefully, it'll inspire circle jerks."
