Headquartered in Americus, Ga., it was founded in 1976 by businessman Millard Fuller and his wife.  of Southern Ocean County's newest project, a two-bedroom home currently under construction on Otis Avenue in Tuckerton.

renovated in the local area since it was affiliated 12 years ago. In June, a barn-raising was held to complete the framing of the two-story house, which is expected to be completed this fall.

The cost of Habitat homes is offset by volunteer labor and donations of money and construction materials from businesses, community groups, churches and individuals.

Waiters has encouraged its long-time building suppliers to also volunteer their time and expertise building homes.

Edward Waiters, Jr., founder and partner at the Walters Group, was able to coordinate donations for roofing, siding, interior stairs construction, and water and sewer SEWER. Walters paid for building material and labor which amounted to nearly $4,000 while many suppliers donated materials and services.

The roofing materials, for example, were donated by the Manahawkin branch of the Standard Group where siding materials were also purchased by the Waiters Group. The following local suppliers also provided their building services at a discounted rate: Manahawkinbased Donald Cabot Roofing Siding Inc., Builders FirstSource, and Jersey Pipeline Plumbing plumbing, piping systems inside buildings for water supply and sewage. The Romans had a highly developed plumbing system; water was brought to Rome by aqueducts and distributed to homes in lead pipes—hence the name plumbing from the Latin word plumbum  and Heating.

"Habitat is working to build simple, decent housing for working families, and we're proud to support their efforts," says Walters. "Working with our sub-contractors, we can give more than we could give alone."

Since the house is located in the historic district of Tuckerton, the design had to complement other homes in the area. As a result, this is the first time Habitat for Humanity of Southern Ocean County has undertaken a two-story structure.

As land and building prices have escalated in New Jersey, the organization's goal of building affordable homes for low-income workers has become a challenge. "Our biggest difficulty is getting property so we can build," notes Wiley.
