Wallflowers still get asked to dance.

Byline: Lewis Taylor The Register-Guard

Say you're the son of a folk-rock legend, your band sold 4 million copies of its sophomore album and you won a pair of Grammys.

What do you do next?

If you're Jakob Dylan - vocalist, songwriter and guitarist for the roots-rock band the Wallflowers - you just keep on keeping on and try to make things interesting.

"Taking risks and having records that go left and right is all part of what I want us to be," Dylan said in a news release. "There is that saying that it's not a race, it's a marathon. I'm not even into that.

`I don't see anybody in front of me or anybody behind me, and there is no finish line. You just keep going."

Eight years after the release of the career-making "Bringing Down the Horse," Dylan - the son of folk-rock star and women's underwear endorser Bob Dylan Noun 1. Bob Dylan - United States songwriter noted for his protest songs (born in 1941)

as a guitarist. O'Brien toured with Neil Young in 1997.

Following the two-week string of dates, the Wallflowers will head into the studio with O'Brien and record their fifth album. The tour will give the band the chance to road test some of its new songs, along with a mix of hits, rarities and covers.

"Over the last few years, we've been trying to pick up something different with our tours, and that's that our shows vary each night," Dylan said in a recent interview with the Desert Sun newspaper in Palm Springs, Calif. "A lot of people go from show to show. ...

`Even if we do the same songs, we'll do a different arrangement. It's for the fans and for us."

Putting its money where its mouth is, the band is giving away prizes to fans who can predict the fifth song of each set list.

The setlist is not the only indication that the Wallflowers are mixing it up. The band's current tour includes stops at all types of venues, including large outdoor spots, concert theaters and smaller clubs such as the Jungle.

"I think I'm having a better time being in this group since the very first lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. ," Dylan said in a news release. "We didn't know what the hell we were doing. We got very far off track from that for a long time."

The first Wallflowers lineup came together in 1990 and released a self-titled debut on Virgin Records. It earned some critical acclaim but failed to garner much mainstream attention, and label quickly dropped the band.

Dylan responded to the setback by hiring a new group. He kept only his keyboardist and brought in star producer T-Bone Burnett, a friend of the Dylan family, to oversee the group's second album.

In 1996, the band released "Bringing Down the Horse," which spawned the singles `6th Avenue Heartache," "One Headlight" and "The Difference" and introduced the the group to a whole new audience.

The Wallflowers followed those up in 2000 with "Breach" and in 2003 with "Red Letter Days," an album co-produced by the group's original gui- tarist, Tobias Miller.

Prior to forming the Wallflowers, Dylan grew up in California. The youngest of five children, he was raised in Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  by his mother, Sara Lowndes, after his parents divorced in 1977.
