This book is a Christian romance set at the end of WW II in the small town of Rosemond, CA, where Annie Penner lives with her mother and works as a furniture store bookkeeper. News that the war is over causes great celebration among the townspeople. Included among the returning servicemen is Donald Nakamura who was snatched away to an internment internment, in international law, detention of the nationals or property of an enemy or a belligerent. A belligerent will intern enemy merchant ships or take them as prize, and a neutral should intern both belligerent ships that fail to leave its ports within a camp and eventually joined the army to serve in a Japanese regiment. Donald and Annie had fallen in love in college, realizing their deep feelings for each other as he was forced to leave. Their letters had mysteriously stopped coming after a few questionable gaps in the exchange of information. They renew their acquaintance and realize that their passion for each other has not changed. But Annie is Mennonite Brethren and Donald is Baptist and Japanese. The frustrations they encounter due to post-war discrimination and the expectations of family and religious culture are almost more than they can withstand, but they hang on even through the anti-miscegenation laws Anti-miscegenation laws (also known as miscegenation laws) were laws that banned interracial marriage and sometimes also interracial sex. The conflict in this novel is centered on the religious and racial prejudices that prevailed at that time and it reveals much about the ethnicity of the main characters.
