Wait for armored truck lengthens.Byline: Rebecca Nolan The Register-Guard CORRECTION (ran 9/23/2005): A photograph caption published Thursday on Page D1 with a story about plans by the Eugene Police Department to purchase an armored truck incorrectly identified the type of vehicle the police plan to acquire. The vehicle shown is a military version of the Lenco BearCat and differs in a number of ways with the civilian police version of the armored vehicle. The Eugene Police Department's plans to acquire a new armored SWAT truck and to install digital video cameras in 55 patrol cars have been delayed. The department originally hoped to have its new Lenco BearCat armored truck by the end of this summer, but the purchase has been pushed off while the Massachusetts-based company fulfills various Department of Homeland Security Noun 1. The truck sits on a Ford F-550 commercial truck chassis and uses Ford's 6.0-liter, turbo-diesel, 5-speed automatic transmission. It's wrapped in half-inch-thick steel and has bullet-resistant windows and doors. According to according to prep. 1. As stated or indicated by; on the authority of: according to historians. 2. The truck has two rear doors, as well as doors on the driver and passenger sides. It has regular tires instead of tracks. The police department currently owns an old armored bank truck that the department bought for $1 many years ago, Kerns said. The agency painted it and put a light bar on it, and has used it at several high-risk SWAT scenes. But its bullet resistance is not much better than that of a patrol car, the lieutenant said. "It has served us pretty well, but it's wearing out," Kerns said. "The most common use for the SWAT team is when we go to the scene of a barricaded bar·ri·cade n. 1. During periods of internal turmoil, insurgents often seize hostages; recent examples include seizures of Americans and other foreigners by militants in situation." In those cases, police use it to carry equipment and officers closer to the target building. From there, for example, they can toss the agency's "throw phone" into a window to communicate with the subject. In the past, Eugene police have borrowed a tank-like vehicle called a light-armored vehicle from the Oregon National Guard while executing high-risk search warrants. This new armored truck looks nothing like a tank, Kerns said. "This looks like a police vehicle painted the same color as other police vehicles," he said. "It won't look or sound anything like a tank." The department's plans to install digital video cameras in 55 patrol cars has also hit a speed bump. The agency's first request for proposals was too specific, Kerns said, and it scared bidders off. So the department rewrote the RFP (Request For Proposal) A document that invites a vendor to submit a bid for hardware, software and/or services.
