WYSE INTRODUCES OPEN MULTIUSER/NETWORK SERVER PLATFORM WITH ADVANCED SCALABILITY AND SECURITY FEATURES

SAN JOSE, Calif., May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyse Technology Inc. today introduced the Decision 486se Tower, an open multiuser platform and network server available in a variety of standard models and custom configurations. The Decision 486se Tower incorporates scalable system technology, which accommodates the range of Intel i486 processors and allows easy upgrades. Advanced security features help provide a secure environment for mission-critical installations.
Powered by the Decision 486se Tower, departmental workgroups can access large applications and databases, share peripherals and optimize E-mail transfer. For UNIX multiuser computing environments, the system is certified to run SCO UNIX and also runs Univel's UnixWare. In addition to being certified for Novell NetWare and Banyan VINES for Windows and DOS environments, the system is available in ready-to-run Microsoft Windows for Workgroups models. Specific Windows NT-ready versions of the decision 486se Tower, with new SCSI-2 drives, will be offered later this year.
"The need for servers in open environments has increased as information within organizations becomes more decentralized," said Jack Kister, director of product marketing for Wyse's Systems Division. "The Decision 486se Tower provides the necessary computing power at a competitive price to working groups that need to access and share the same information and resources. In addition, because the Decision 486se is open and accommodates multiple operating systems, our customers can choose which operating and networking environment is best suited to their needs."
 System Features Scalability
Based on Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA), the Decision 486se Tower ships with 33MHz i486 and 66MHz i486DX2 processors. A Zero Insertion Force processor socket and user-selectable clock speed circuitry, allows customers to use the range of Intel i486 processors from 25MHz i486X to 66MHz i486DX2. The standard 4MB of RAM is expandable to 128MB. For greater system throughput, the Decision 486se Tower's external cache is expandable to 512KB. Six available EISA slots and six half-height storage shelves offer flexible expandability. Customers can choose size and type of hard disk drives, tape drives and multiport boards. The system is housed in a large tower chassis that opens without tools for easier servicing.
 Advanced Security Features Protect Data
To help protect an installation's data integrity, several security features that are independent of the operating system are incorporated in the Decision 486se Tower's BIOS. Password protection on both the boot-up and the setup and configuration utility provides the system administrator with two levels of security. In addition, the administrator may specify the method of booting to
eliminate the possibility of unauthorized system access. A date/time lock eliminates the ability to hide unauthorized accesses and a key lock on the chassis provides physical protection against system tampering.
Standard Models and Customized Configurations Offered
Standard configurations are available in UNIX-ready, ready-to-run Windows for Workgroups and network-ready models. Estimated selling prices for UNIX models begin at $3,949. Windows for Workgroups models start at $2,669, estimated selling price. Network-ready systems begin at an estimated selling price of $2,869.
In addition to the standard configurations, custom configurations are offered. Customers can order the exact system needed and save time and money on configuration setup. Starting with the CPU, customers can specify cache and memory size, disk type and size, operating system and accessories.
 Pricing and Availability
All models are available immediately. Recognizing the need to provide accurate pricing information to customers, estimated selling prices of the standard models are provided. Because Wyse sells its products through indirect channels of distribution, distributors and value added resellers (VARs), list prices do not provide an accurate indication of end user pricing. The company said the switch from publishing list prices to estimated selling prices better reflects what an end user customer can expect to pay for a system.
Wyse Technology is a leading independent supplier of microprocessor- based products, which include terminals, IBM PC-compatible computers, monitors and UNIX-based multiuser systems. The company sells its products through distributors, value added resellers and original equipment manufacturers. Headquartered in San Jose, Wyse operates sales offices across the United States and in Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore and Europe.
