 WYETH-AYERST AND PANLABS SIGN RESEARCH COLLABORATION
 BOTHELL, Wash. and PHILADELPHIA, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Wyeth-


Ayerst Laboratories, a division of American Home Products Corporation (NYSE: AHP), and Panlabs, Inc. announced today the signing of a multiyear natural products discovery research program.
 The program, to be conducted collaboratively by Panlabs and Wyeth- Ayerst, will focus on the detection of novel pharmacologically active substances possessing therapeutic potential. The target areas are inflammation, osteoporosis, hypertension and neurological diseases, including stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Under the terms of the agreement, Wyeth-Ayerst will own all inventions relating to the composition of active metabolites, direct products or derivative products, and the patents directed to such inventions.
 Dr. Robert I. Levy, president of Wyeth-Ayerst Research, said, "This collaboration will enhance our ability to screen for novel therapeutics using well defined molecular targets associated with a variety of important diseases."
 According to Panlabs' chairman of the board and chief executive officer, Dr. Christopher Ball, the two companies plan to form a scientific advisory committee staffed by researchers from Panlabs and Wyeth-Ayerst. "The advisory committee represents a spirit of teamwork and collaboration, which will maximize research results on both sides," Ball said.
