The chip recycles energy from its ``clock,'' the timing signal that's usually used to synchronize the chip's computing functions. Once it has wound its way through the chip's circuits, the signal is converted to magnetic form - instead of burned off as heat in typical chips - and then reconverted to electricity. It can then be used again. The researchers say the result is a 75 percent to 80 percent energy savings compared to normal chips.
