systems for treating cancer with radiation therapy, as well as for security and industrial inspection.

Microlab/FXR will provide an integrated sub-system for Varian's medical and industrial linear accelerators, including the high-energy Clinac(R) accelerator used by radiation oncologists to deliver Varian's SmartBeam(TM) IMRT IMRT Intensity-modulated radiation therapy Radiation oncology A format for delivering high-dose RT to regions–eg, nasopharynx, that are surrounded by radiation-sensitive areas; in IMRT, a broad radiation field is divided into hundreds of small pencil beams, . SmartBeam IMRT is a very precise form of radiation therapy that narrowly targets irregularly shaped tumors, reducing the exposure of surrounding healthy tissues. Varian expects the Microlab/FXR subsystem will improve the company's manufacturing throughput.

"We were faced with an engineering challenge which extended beyond the typical boundaries of RF/microwave designs. There was strong competition for this slot, but we were able to succeed based on the innovative design approach of senior microwave designer Dr. Jianxiang Wu and the strong relationship that we have developed with Varian over many years," said Rand Skopas, director of Field Sales for Microlab/FXR.
