The memory of Washington's 45-point defeathering of the Ducks nearly a month ago has not faded.

"We are completely into who's next," said Bev Smith Bev Smith (born April 4 1960) is the head women's basketball coach at the University of Oregon. The Cougars, who have played Oregon 54 times and won just nine since the series began 30 years ago, are in town at 7 tonight for a reunion with the Ducks at McArthur Court McArthur Court is a basketball arena located on the campus of the University of Oregon in Eugene. Also known as "The Pit," it is known as one of the toughest arenas in the country for opposing players to play in. The arena is named for Clifton N. .

Oregon is a .500 outfit after 22 games, taking an 11-11 overall record and a 3-9 Pac-10 performance into the WSU contest. The Ducks have lost four of their past five games.

The Cougars (5-17, 1-12) have lost 15 of their past 16 games, the only win in that stretch a come-from-behind effort on Jan. 29 against California, which has lost nine straight.

Two days after Oregon was handed its worst loss in Pac-10 history - and third-worst ever - at Seattle 95-50, it defeated WSU, for the sixth straight time, in Pullman Pullman.

Smith, whose team is attempting to rebound from last weekend's 14-point loss at Oregon State, said the Ducks must beware of Washington State.

"They have some strengths," Smith said.

Bianca McCall, a 6-foot-1 senior averaging a team-high 11.7 points, has started 11 of the 20 games in which she has played. Kate Benz, a 6-2 freshman from Portland's Central Catholic High, had a 20-point, 10-rebound game against UCLA UCLA University of California at Los Angeles

 last weekend.

The Cougars appear to be a slightly better team on the road (3-9) than at home (2-8), similar to Oregon in Pac-10 play - 1-4 at home, 2-5 away from McArthur Court.

"We need to come out and put Oregon and Oregon State on their heels," said Cougars coach Sherri Murrell, whose team plays the Beavers on Saturday in Corvallis.

"We need to pay attention to Washington State," Smith said. "The inside game hurt us against Oregon State. We must play team defense. We must pressure the ball."

It's a game plan that was not executed well by the Ducks in the loss at Oregon State, Smith said, a loss in which Oregon never led and never was able to forge a tie.

And never mind the fact that Oregon is 22-4 against the Cougars in games played Games played (most often abbreviated as G or GP) is a statistic used in team sports to indicate the total number of games in which a player has participated (in any capacity); the statistic is generally applied irrespective of whatever portion of the game is contested.  at McArthur Court.

"We don't, and we can't, take anyone for granted,' said Brandi Davis, a 6-foot junior guard who has a team-high 33 three-pointers for the Ducks.

"We can't project that we own that team," Smith said. "This is not about Washington State. Against Oregon State, we sat on our heels for the first four minutes (and trailed 10-0)."

Which is why Smith, on Wednesday, anyway, was considering a starting lineup For the line of action figures, see .

adjustment from the Davis-Andrea Bills-Eleanor Haring-Kedzie Gunderson-Corrie Mizusawa group that has started the past five games for the Ducks.

"We are searching for a starting group that will give us what we need immediately in a game," Smith said.

Davis has had WSU's number. In three career games against the Cougars, she has averaged 20 points in an average of 26 minutes.

"She gets ready to play, she's quick and Brandi is bigger than their perimeter players," Smith said. "She knows Washington State will give its best, and that's what she wants to do."
