Scylla lived on the rocks on the Italian side of the Strait of Messina, where she seized sailors from passing ships and devoured them. Caragliano died instantly when the car in which she was a passenger was hit by a car driven by Adam Martinez, 24, of Sylmar, police said. Martinez was driving a 1984 blue Pontiac Firebird eastbound in the westbound lanes of the Ronald Reagan Freeway, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Officer Gretchen Jacobs. Manuel Phillip Lopez, 21, of Baldwin Park, is the third driver suspected of a wrong-way collision. Police say he was trying to elude officers by driving southbound on the northbound lanes of the Pomona Freeway on Aug. 22. Two of three passengers died. Alcohol or drugs are believed to have played a part in all the crashes, authorities said.
