WRITER/DIRECTOR/ACTOR ROBERT TOWNSEND AND ACTRESS/AUTHOR RUBY DEE
DO DRAMATIC READINGS FOR PAL KIDS TO SUPPORT LITERACY
WHO: Writer/director/actor Robert Townsend (Hollywood Shuffle) and actress/author Ruby Dee (featured in two Spike Lee films), with the support of literacy experts from the Children's Literacy Initiative (CLI), will read to a group of children participating in the Police Athletic League (PAL).
WHAT: Chase Story Time is a public-interest storytelling program that promotes literacy in local communities through reading aloud to children. Children will listen to stories brought to life in an imaginary setting created especially for the occasion. Chase Manhattan branch employees also will read. Each child will take home a book selected from a list of titles recommended by literacy experts.
Titles include: A Chair For My Mother by Vera B. Williams, The Cut- Ups by James Marshall, Ira Says Goodbye by Bernard Waber, and The Knee High Man by Julius Lester.
WHY: According to a U.S. Department of Education study, reading aloud to children is the single most important way to help them develop the vocabulary necessary to read. This program is a grassroots extension of "Mrs. Bush's Story Time," a national radio program featuring
First Lady Barbara Bush reading some of today's best children's books. To encourage children to develop a love and desire for reading, events in 14 communities in New York and Connecticut are being sponsored by Chase Manhattan Visa and MasterCard this month.
 WHEN: Monday, Dec. 16, 1991 from 4:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: The Chase Manhattan branch at 4 Columbus Circle
 (58th Street and Eighth Avenue)

Branches at 30 Rockefeller Plaza and 60 E. 42 St. also are conducting readings with CLI and branch personnel for PAL participants on Dec. 16 at 4:00 p.m.)
