LANCASTER - ``Youth Exploring Astronomy'' is the title of the sixth annual essay contest sponsored by the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

The contest is open to students in grades 5 to 8 and the deadline to submit a minimum 500-word essay is March 15.

Winners will be chosen based on the enthusiasm and creativity demonstrated in their essays. The works will be judged by a panel of parents, amateur astronomers, local dignitaries and air and space professionals.

Fifth- and sixth-graders must write on either of these themes: ``To fly through space from star to star, what wonders I'd see'' or ``Stars and telescopes.''

Choices for themes for essays by the older grade levels are ``The benefits of living in the era of space discovery'' or ``The solar system solar system, the sun and the surrounding planets, natural satellites, dwarf planets, asteroids, meteoroids, and comets that are bound by its gravity. The sun is by far the most massive part of the solar system, containing almost 99.9% of the system's total mass.  is not just planets.''

Eight winners, two from each grade level, will be selected. Winners will be recognized at an Astronomy Club meeting and will receive T-shirts, a tour of Jet Propulsion Laboratory “JPL” redirects here. For other uses, see JPL (disambiguation).

The club, founded in 1982, was formed by astronomy buffs to share their knowledge of the beauty of the night sky with local families. The club puts on presentations at local schools, state parks and other venues under dark skies Dark Skies is an American sci-fi/drama television series which aired during the 1996-1997 season for 20 episodes. The success of The X-Files on the FOX Network proved there was an audience for genre shows, resulting in the NBC Network commissioning this proposed . Members meet the second Friday of every month at SAGE Planetarium, 38060 20th St. East.
