They both need two victories at today's conclusion to earn a top-eight medal in the grueling double-elimination tournament A double-elimination tournament is a competition in which a participant ceases to be eligible to win the tournament's championship upon having lost two games or matches. .

Garcia and German (171), both won their openers but lost in the second round. Garcia was outpointed 4-1 by Granite Bay's Kurt Russell, and German was pinned in 5:04 by East Bakersfield's Britt Mooney.

Garcia pinned McAteer's Carl Seumanutafa in 3:14 in the first round but couldn't parlay the momentum against Russell. They were scoreless after two grueling periods, with Russell taking an injury timeout for a stinger stinger Sports medicine A popular term for an injury to the brachial plexus due to abnormal stretching  and Garcia taking two injury timeouts for a neck injury and a sore knee.

Russell, ranked No. 4 in the state by California Wrestler, took advantage of Garcia's second timeout, choosing the bottom and managing a one-point escape. He followed with another escape and a two-point takedown Takedown

, and his sticky style was too difficult for Garcia to solve.

``He was a good rider, and I shouldn't have given him that first point,'' Garcia said. ``I had some chances but I blew them and kept missing.''

Russell (46-1), a junior, felt conditioning was the difference in the match.

``He was tired and I was in way better shape,'' Russell said. ``'I had to keep putting a lot of pressure on him. I don't think his injuries were anything major or that they changed the outcome of the match. I just kept pressing on him so he couldn't stand up, plus I had control of his arms.''

Garcia rebounded with a 5-2 decision over Sultana's Mike Aguirre Michael Jules Aguirre (born 1949) is the City Attorney for the City of San Diego, California. A frequent political candidate and prominent figure in San Diego politics, Aguirre was elected as city attorney in November, 2004. .

After an 8-5 opening victory over Hughson's Keith Ille extended his record to 23-0, German's winning streak was thudded by Mooney (26-3).

Mooney was leading 5-0 when he flattened German with a side headlock.

``I just didn't let him tie me or throw me,'' Mooney said. ``He's all upper body, and it's difficult when someone good gets on top of him. It kind of wore him down.''

German, a junior making his third trip to this tournament, avoided elimination by outpointing Mendota's Moises Luna 3-2.
