WRESTLING NOTEBOOK: NICE SURPRISE FOR HIGHLAND JUNIOR VARSITY WRESTLERS' FINISH AT LOUGHRIDGE IS IMPRESSIVE.

Byline: Dave Shelburne Staff Writer

They have been the unsung contributors to Highland High's wrestling success, but junior varsity junior varsity

coaches Joe Susilla and Jason Chronister managed to raise their profile considerably last weekend, when their Highland JV team placed second in the Bobby Loughridge tournament, an 11-team event that included 10 other varsity teams In the United States and Canada and UK, varsity sports teams are the principal athletic teams representing a college, university, or high school or other secondary school. Such teams compete against the principal athletic teams at other colleges/universities, or in the case of .

``They get them up for every match,'' said Highland coach Mike Young, whose varsity finished 10-0 ahead of the JV's 9-1 record in the Loughridge event at Highland.

``They let them believe in themselves, and a lot of them know they can compete,'' Young said. ``I was very pleased.''

Lancaster coach Pat Hayhurst offered a tongue-in-cheek counterpoint counterpoint, in music, the art of combining melodies each of which is independent though forming part of a homogeneous texture. The term derives from the Latin for "point against point," meaning note against note in referring to the notation of plainsong. :

``It really ticked me off, because they beat us,'' Hayhurst said jokingly of the Highland JVs finishing ahead of his third-place varsity. ``But realistically, their JV team is as good as most varsity teams. (Young) could take his No. 2 kids and go out and be competitive in just about every tournament.''

``They can place in the varsity league tournament,'' Young said. ``What could happen is a JV goes over there and beats a varsity happened several times.''

--Memorable title: Highland clinched a share of its 11th Golden League title in 12 years Wednesday, when the Young-coached Bulldogs defeated Stuart Young-coached Littlerock, which is 2-2 in the younger Young's first year on the job.

``He's doing really well,'' Mike Young said of his son's first-year coaching efforts after Highland improved to 4-0 in league with a 69-3 victory at Littlerock.

``They took fourth at our tournament last weekend. He started off with only 18 in the (wrestling) room, and they went 7-3 at our tournament. Rome wasn't built in a day "Rome Wasn't Built in a Day" is a single by Morcheeba released in 2000. Song information

``The only way that's going to happen is if we wrestle an absolutely 100 percent perfect match and they have an off night,'' the Lancaster coach said.

``But quite honestly, they just have too many weapons, and I just don't think we'll be able to take them, especially since they've been a power in wrestling for 14 years.''

--Best ever: Lancaster goes into its league finale with a 27-8 record that is best in the school's history, an accomplishment that has helped the Eagles earn a No. 6 ranking among Southern Section Div. VI teams.

Junior Michael Quiros, who competes at 119 pounds, has been the Eagles' standout again after qualifying for Southern Section postseason competition the past two years.
