And nearly a year to the day after the former San Fernando coach died of cancer, the Tigers won a third consecutive City Section championship in his honor.

DeJohn founded the program and was instrumental in helping wrestling become an officially sanctioned CIF (1) (Common Intermediate Format) A standard video format used in videoconferencing. ``It's an honor to even know his name,'' said Raphael Reynolds, the City Section wrestler of the year who won his second consecutive City title at the 135-pound division for San Fernando, which won its 10th title, tying El Camino Real El Camino Real (Spanish for The Royal Road or The King's Highway) was the name of a series of pre-automobile highways linking the various New World colonies of Spain:

Reynolds won all three of his matches by pins in less than four minutes - combined. He pinned Luis Mesa of Bell in the championship match in 1:41.

First-year coach Fernando Gonzalez reminded his team of the history before the championship round.

``I told them that there's a lot of spirit and soul that's in that cup,'' he said. ``That cup has touched the hand of coach DeJohn, coach Mike Castillo, and many other of the coaches in the City, but for us, coach DeJohn is the one who started most of it.''

San Fernando finished with 194 points, 24 ahead of second place Bell (170.5). Chatsworth, which led the section with four individual championships, finished third with 150.

``We know he's (DeJohn) smiling down on us,'' Reynolds said. ``He inspired this team.''

DeJohn is considered one of the most significant figures in Valley wrestling history, and Saturday's championship was a virtual who's-who of people he impacted, including Canoga Park coach Phillip Guerrero, a former two-time City champion who wrestled under him.

``He basically put me on the right path,'' Guerrero said. ``I was from a low-income area. There were a lot of bad influences and this was my key - my key out of the neighborhood. It got me into college and got me an education, so I would say he was like a second father to me. He was tremendous.''
