WPP GROUP ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT OF DAVID OGILVY AS CHAIRMAN
NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- WPP Group plc today announced that David Ogilvy has retired as chairman and that Gordon Stevens will succeed him. This follows the passing of the resolutions concerning the group's capital restructuring at the general meetings of shareholders held yesterday in London.
In recognition of his invaluable services to the group, the board has invited David Ogilvy to stay on as President Emeritus and consultant, and he has accepted. In this role, Ogilvy, aged 81, will continue to make his unique contribution to the group, particularly Ogilvy & Mather Worldwide, the company he founded.
Stevens, prior to his retirement, had a distinguished marketing and management career with Unilever. This has given him extensive international experience with posts in the United Kingdom, United States, Germany, India, Australia and the Netherlands. He is therefore already closely acquainted with many of the companies that make up the WPP Group.
After service in the RNVR he joined Unilever as a management trainee from Oxford University in 1949 and by 1976 had become a board director of Unilever PLC and Unilever NV, a post he held for 12 years.
From 1976 to 1984 he was the director responsible for Unilever's personal products business and also for the central marketing division. In 1984 he left the UK to live in the United States as regional director for North America - chairman Unilever United States and Unilever Canada.
Stevens, now aged 66, returned to the UK late in 1988 and was appointed chairman of Scholl PLC, the international personal products company, in 1990. He will retain that position.
