WORTH 1,000 WORDS; PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBIT A COUNTY FAIR FAVORITE.

Byline: Don Holland Staff Writer

It's the very picture of serenity - autumn leaves and a patch of leafy fern aglow with afternoon light as a stream rushes over boulders worn smooth by time and water.

Capturing the perfect image on film is as much an art as it is a science. It's also a challenge that draws thousands of photography lovers every year to the Ventura County Fair's photo exhibit.

``There's a lot of skill in that shot,'' said Mac Middleton, admiring the prize-winning landscape by Ron Golden. ``For a photographer, it takes some thought and planning to visualize an image in your mind'' before actually taking the photograph.

The photography exhibit is a good chance to see the newest work from some of the county's best amateur and professional photographers. It's also an opportunity to see how others view the world.

``Photography is kind of like life,'' said Middleton, who makes the annual trek to the fair from his home in Valencia. ``We have to stay fresh and see things with a fresh eye. Even some of the marginal work can be interesting.''

The photo exhibit was at the top of Dave Combe's list of things to see at the fair. Combe combe

``The graininess graininess

of the photograph complements the texture of the wall,'' Combe said approvingly. ``You can have a good negative, and how you do the print can make the difference between a good picture and a great picture. . . . With good photography, you see the world in a new way. It's the same way with great paintings.''

This year's categories include portraiture, nature, animals and seascapes Seascapes is an RTÉ Radio 1 programme broadcast on Fridays at 8.30 pm. and presented by Tom MacSweeney.
