WORLDWIDE FOREST PRODUCTS' SMC SUBSIDIARY NAMED
PRINCIPAL SUBCONTRACTOR FOR REVOLUTIONARY COOKING SYSTEM
JACKSON, Miss., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Worldwide Forest Products Inc. (NASDAQ: WOOD) announced today that its Texas-based SMC subsidiary has been named the principal subcontractor for an innovative oven utilizing a revolutionary cooking technology. SMC was selected by the developer of the technology and a major multinational electronics manufacturer to fabricate and assemble the critical cooking apparatus and to assist in the manufacturing design on the pre-production run. SMC's revenues from this cooking system should initially exceed $3,000 per unit. A major international food chain has tested the new ovens and is preparing to use them in its nationwide restaurant chain. SMC anticipates production of approximately 5,100 units in this first phase, including 100 in the pre-production run.
The oven is designed to accelerate the cooking time of foods such as bread, meat, chicken and prepared food items such as pizza. The primary application is in the fast-food industry where, as an example, a single oven will cook up to 60 full-size pizzas in less than one hour. A single pizza prepared with raw ingredients can be cooked and served fresh in less than one minute. "This technology represents a revolution in food cooking not unlike the microwave oven when it was first introduced," said Michael C. Qualls, SMC chief executive officer. "The look and taste of food items cooked in these ovens is indistinguishable from foods cooked in conventional ovens."
SMC, a 43-year-old company, fabricates precision metal products, electronic circuitry and computer components for automotive, security, military and other commercial applications where precise dimensions and premium quality are essential. David E. Wise, chairman of Worldwide Forest Products, said, "SMC has an industry reputation for innovative product development and has been designated a certified 'Q-1' manufacturer for Ford Motor Co., signifying superior manufacturing capabilities."
Worldwide, through its subsidiaries, manufactures precision metal products and pressure treated wood products for distribution throughout North America and internationally.
