 WORLD'S QUIETEST HELICOPTER CELEBRATES
FIRST SERVICE ANNIVERSARY IN TYPICAL FASHION
MESA, Ariz., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- The McDonnell Douglas MD 520N -- the world's quietest helicopter -- will celebrate its first full year of service today in the same way it operates: quietly.
That's a good sign for the MD 520N, which already is performing a variety of missions in urban and rural communities around the world.
It's a good sign for the environment as well.
"With noise pollution a growing concern just about everywhere, we're excited about offering a helicopter that is an outstanding performer as well as a good neighbor," said Bob Grace, vice president of business development for McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Co.
More than 30 MD 520Ns are in service around the world, spreading the word about the remarkable aircraft's quiet operations, ease of operation and maintenance, and increased safety in the air and on the ground.
And customers who buy MD 520Ns soon will put one major cost concern behind them: the finite life ratings on many of the helicopter's NOTAR(TM) anti-torque system assemblies are about to be extended to 5,000 hours time between overhaul.
That can mean reduced operating costs for owners of the newest member of the MD 500 Series, which is produced by McDonnell Douglas Helicopter in Mesa.
The extensions, issued by the Federal Aviation Administration, (FAA) are expected within the next few months.
Currently, the NOTAR fan assembly and other system components have completed the 30,000 equivalent hours of ground fatigue testing required by the FAA to substantiate a 7,500-hour TBO for those components. Included in the testing were the hub, the fan assembly, and mechanical pitch change controls.
One composite component, the horizontal stabilizer, recently qualified for a 10,000-hour rating and is awaiting approval.
McDonnell Douglas Helicopter has a backlog of more than 100 orders for MD 520N helicopters.
MD Explorer due for first flight this year
Additionally, McDonnell Douglas (NYSE: MD) is preparing its new twin-turbine MD Explorer for first flight later this year. The eight-place MD Explorer, which also uses the NOTAR system, is expected to be the quietest helicopter in its class.
The MD Explorer is expected to comply with the FAA's strict Stage 2 noise limits by an overall margin that is greater than any other helicopter, including the MD 520N.
More than 250 certificates of interest have been received for the MD Explorer.
The MD Explorer will feature a new main rotor system with an advanced airfoil and tip shape design. Its improved performance and low noise characteristics will complement the quiet NOTAR system.
The MD Explorer will be quiet inside, as well, adding to crew and passenger comfort. Careful attention has been given to noise control design features of the cabin interior.
