PALMDALE -- Construction is expected to start this spring on two new fire stations at the city's east and west ends, where development over the past 10 years has put hundreds of homes miles from the nearest fire stations.

The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is the five member governing board of Los Angeles County, California. Members of the board of supervisors are elected by district, the current members as of April 2006 are:
  • District 1: Gloria Molina, Democrat
will vote today on allowing the long-sought projects to go out for bids.

"They will provide substantial improved response times for both sides of town," said Councilman Steve Hofbauer, who was involved in the discussions between the city and county on the project. "They will provide significant relief for our crews."

The cost is expected to be $14.1 million for both stations, which will be single-story buildings with Spanish-style, red-tile roofs.

Fire Station 93 will be built next to Domenic Massari Park on Avenue R at 55th Street East, and Fire Station 136 will be built next to Esperanza School at Town Center Drive and Bolz Ranch Road.

The stations would open in 2008, initially staffed by one engine company each. Station 93 will have bays for three vehicles; Station 136, for two.

Each station will be built with an office and sleeping quarters ready to be used by a battalion battalion

Palmdale provided the land for both stations and contributed toward road work and utility lines needed for the stations. Part of the costs, 24 percent for each station, will be paid for through fees assessed on new homes and businesses starting in 1999, after the opening of Station 131.

Palmdale now has three fire stations: Station 37 downtown, Station 24 near the Antelope Valley Mall and Station 131 on Avenue S near 25th Street East. Station 24 opened in 1976 and Station 131 in 1998.
