Monday for a $9.5 million school that will get the district's sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders out of facilities designed for younger children.

The new middle school - to be named, like the one it replaces, for former trustee Gifford C. Cole - is scheduled to open in late 1999 at Avenue I and 30th Street East with financing from a bond issue approved by Eastside voters in November.

``It will give us room. They will have a gym. They will have science labs and a library. It will all be better facilities,'' the trustees' president, Martha Johnson, said after a traditional ceremony of turning shovelfuls of dirt.

Located on 20 acres that once held a low-rent mobile-home park, the school will house 700 students, with room for 1,000 after a second phase is built.

The 5,500-square-foot first phase will include a gymnasium gymnasium

Because of its origin as an elementary school, Cole has had no gymnasium, and its students have used converted classrooms for a library and science laboratories.

For about $90,000, the district has acquired land at 40th Street East and Avenue J-8 from the city for a new elementary school. Expected to cost about $6.5 million, it would handle 550 students in kindergarten through fifth grade.

No date has been set for the opening of the elementary school.
