WORK STARTS ON NEW CLINIC.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE Edwards Air Force Base, U.S. military installation, 301,000 acres (121,805 hectares), S Calif., NE of Lancaster; est. 1933. It is one of the largest air force bases in the United States and has the world's longest runway.  - Construction has started on a new medical clinic to replace the former base hospital, built in 1955 and now the oldest military treatment facility in the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. .

The new clinic, to be staffed by 130 95th Medical Group members, is being built because the old hospital building has too little space for outpatient facilities and ancillary services, and the inpatient inpatient /in·pa·tient/ (in´pa-shent) a patient who comes to a hospital or other health care facility for diagnosis or treatment that requires an overnight stay.

``Our current medical facility has served us well for nearly 50 years but was designed for inpatient hospital care,'' said Col. Charles Beadling, 95th Medical Group commander.

Phase three is the primary construction phase of the new medical clinic along with the demolition of the military treatment facility and the renovation of the dental clinic. This phase should last about 20 months.

The project initially got its start in 1998, when the Air Force announced it planned to close the nine-bed base hospital because of a declining patient load. The emergency room closed in 1999, and emergency patients are now taken to hospitals off base.

Congress appropriated $18 million for the clinic building in 2000.
