Below is her winning essay:

Dear sweet little Arah,

You came into my life quite unexpected. I had no idea that at age 76 I would become a grandparent, for the very first time, and experience one of the greatest joys of life.

I can say it is a wonderful blessing and that I received a new lease on life. When I looked into your sweet little angelic face for the very first time, I imagined you growing up to become a person that will offer surprises to the world.

It's been an eventful e·vent·ful

Our time together spent reading your many books and sharing the family's love of music indicates to me that you will be eager to learn when attending school.

For 14 years I have been like a surrogate surrogate n. 1) a person acting on behalf of another or a substitute, including a woman who gives birth to a baby of a mother who is unable to carry the child. 2) a judge in some states (notably New York) responsible only for probates, estates, and adoptions.  grandparent to the many children passing through my child-care, and I've enjoyed seeing them develop and grow into wonderful individuals, never dreaming that one day I'd have you, Arah, my very own little granddaughter.

You will be guided by Grandma, as well as your parents, on your journey with love and encouragement keeping you safe and protected.

I have many prayer-filled wishes for you. The most important of these are that you be truly happy, love to learn and love to accomplish your goals.

Remember always that you were loved from the moment I knew you were coming into the world - and that I love you more and more each day.

I cherish you and will be eternally e·ter·nal
