WOOD, WIND; OLD-STYLE CRAFT UNFURL SAILS OFF OXNARD.

Byline: Lisa Van Proyen Daily News Staff Writer

Beachgoers in Oxnard were treated to an unusually serene sight Saturday when a graceful fleet of sloops, cutters, ketches, yawls and schooners sailed by in the McNish Classic Yacht Race Noun 1. yacht race - a race between crews of people in yachts

Sponsored by the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club, the 21st annual event outside Channel Islands Harbor drew dozens of classic wooden sailboats from Morro Bay to San Diego San Diego (săn dēā`gō), city (1990 pop. 1,110,549), seat of San Diego co., S Calif., on San Diego Bay; inc. 1850. San Diego includes the unincorporated communities of La Jolla and Spring Valley. Coronado is across the bay. .

A number of skippers planned vacations around the event, spending time to visit nearby Channel Islands National Park Channel Islands National Park: see Santa Barbara Islands; National Parks and Monuments (table). .

One of them was Walter Russakoff, 70, of Oxnard, who piloted his hand-built 43-foot cutter, Vignette II, in the race. Russakoff said sailing promotes relaxation.

``Sailing is a great escape mechanism that melts away problems while you're on the water,'' he said.

Ted and Vicki Davis of Las Vegas took the best elapsed time award, along with the best Bristol boat, the 70-foot yawl Alsumar, which the Davis's purchased for $5,000 and spent $1 million to rebuild within four years.

``It is in ship-shape. This is the Windsor Palace of the water,'' said Louise Ann Noeth, publicist for the event.

``The wind was exceptional. From an old wooden sailboat perspective, you couldn't get much better,'' Noeth said. ``It's kind of like Goldilocks gold·i·locks
