The Trojans have had very little room for error in the final month of the season. That frenetic late-season push to salvage an NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association berth seemed to be a good thing Saturday night. USC jumped on the slow-starting Huskies in the first half and held off a furious rally in the second half to pull out a 70-67 victory in front of 4,371 at the HP Pavilion in the quarterfinals of the Pacific-10 Conference tournament. ``This was a game we had to have or we weren't going anywhere,'' said sophomore point guard Camille LeNoir, who finished with 17 points and five assists. The Trojans (18-10) advance to play top-seeded Stanford in the semifinals tonight at 5:30. Most observers think the Pac-10 will get between four and six NCAA tournament bids. USC's victory Saturday night likely wrapped one of those spots up. ``We'll enjoy this one for about 30 minutes and then we'll start worrying about (Candice) Wiggins & Co.,'' USC coach Mark Trakh said. ``That's a heck of a consolation prize, getting to play Stanford after all this.'' Junior forward Eshaya Murphy (Montclair Prep High of Panorama City) led USC with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Washington guard Cameo Hicks led all scorers with 26. In the first half, Hicks seemed like the only Huskies' player who was able to put the ball in the basket. She scored 18 of Washington's 20 first- half points. As a team, Washington (18-10) shot 7 for 36 (19 percent) in the first half. ``I thought we had good energy and toughness in the first half, but we were almost working too hard,'' Washington coach June Daugherty said. ``I'm proud of the kids for working so hard to come back. It was a classic Washington-USC battle that came down to the wire.'' |
