WOMEN: PERSISTENCE DOESN'T PAY UCLA FALLS SHORT VS. USC USC 61, UCLA 56.

an earlier loss to UCLA and improved to 4-6 to open the second half of the Pac-10 season. UCLA (3-18) fell to 2-8 and lost its fifth consecutive game. The Bruins have been in just about every game but haven't found a way to pull out victories.

Case in point: UCLA went on a 10-0 run to cut USC's lead to 47-46 with 7:46 left. But the Bruins never tied the game or took the lead after that. UCLA missed seven of its last nine free throws and was just 7 of 21 from the line.

``They never stop coming at you,'' USC coach Chris Gobrecht said. ``They play with the abandonment of a team that has nothing to lose. No lead is ever good enough. You'd love to just take a break for one trip and they won't let you do it.''

Neither did the Trojans, who used a stifling defense to force 22 turnovers. UCLA wasn't able to run its offense and had just two team assists the first half. The Bruins, who shot 36.9 percent, went through a scoring drought for 7:37 in the first half but remained very much in the game.

``I'm not happy,'' UCLA coach Kathy Olivier said. ``I'm tired of losing. I'm happy with our effort. We're committed defensively but we have to find a way to win. And we have to make our free throws.''

Denise Woods and Tiffany Elmore led USC with 13 points and Ebony Hoffman Ebony Vernice Hoffman (born August 27, 1982 in Los Angeles, California) is a professional basketball player for the Indiana Fever in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA).

The UCLA defense wasn't bad either - the Trojans had 26 turnovers and went 5 1/2 minutes in the first half without a point. But USC, which led 34-26 at halftime, always came up with a big basket. After UCLA pulled within one late, Carmen Carmen

Krause converted a three-point play to build a 50-46 lead. With 2:38 left, Tashara Carter had a putback for a 54-50 lead. UCLA had a chance to cut it to two on the next possession but Natalie Nakase missed two free throws.

``It's always great to beat the Bruins,'' Elmore said. ``We're trying to get off to a good start for the second half of the season. We needed a big win like this.''

After a win over UCLA at this time last year, USC went 7-2 the rest of the way in the Pac-10.

USC freshman guard Aisha Hollans didn't play because of a bruised right shoulder suffered in practice Thursday.
