SAC 10-6, then raced for cover with lightning closing in on the area.

``It was getting a little close,'' said sophomore Samantha Zuckerman, who added three goals. ``I think we were all glad to get out of the water.''

Or, as one parent put it late in the fourth quarter: ``Hurry up and finish this off before we all get barbecued.''

With the victory, Valley (25-4) continued its best season in program history. They won 14 consecutive games at one point and will face top-seeded Long Beach on Friday at Cypress in the regional quarterfinals.

The Monarchs were seeded eighth of 10 teams for the tournament, though they didn't play like it Wednesday. Valley broke open a 2-1 game in the second quarter, scoring three times on breakaways - two by Stiles and one by Megan Winchell.

``I didn't think we would be that much quicker than them,'' Stiles said. ``But (the breakaway) turned out to be our best option.''

Valley put the game out of reach on the final sequence of the third quarter. With a 6-on-5 advantage, the Monarchs swung the ball to Stiles, who fired it for a score to make it 9-4. Winchell added another goal, her team-leading 102nd this season, in the fourth.

Valley got all 13 of its players into the game late. But the memories from Wednesday undoubtedly will be of the rain, lightning and thunder. The officials nearly stopped the match twice, and as soon as it ended, Citrus closed its pool for the rest of the evening.
