Byline: Scott Magoloff Staff Writer

Two hours of soccer were not enough to decide Tuesday's second-round Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Canyons goalkeeper Jessica Gregg saved one, San Diego Mesa missed another, and COC See chip on chip.  advanced to the third round by virtue of its hard-fought 4-2 win.

It was the first playoff victory in the brief two-year history of the program.

``It's neat that we can bring a second-year program to this level,'' said Gregg, who made a diving save to her right to deny midfielder Sara Svennson on the Olympians' third penalty shot. Morgan Lantz missed high on Mesa's first shot.

After saving Svennson's penalty shot, Gregg lined up as COC's third shooter. The left-footed kicker Kicker

Next up for COC (19-2-1) was midfielder Tracy Passafiume, who put it into the left corner and set off an on-field celebration.

``In practice yesterday, I missed every penalty shot,'' Passafiume said. ``I was wondering, `Why is he calling on me?' ''

Canyons controlled most of the play throughout the game, putting 18 shots on goal. Until the shootout, Gregg made two saves.

The Cougars continually came up short on scoring chances. But when in the shootout, Lindsay Moser, Katie Baca, Gregg and Passafiume came through.

``I don't think the sophomores who are going to be leaving (after this year) realize what they've done,'' COC coach Phil Marcellin said. ``It's monumental to think we could start this team and go one game below .500 last year. They worked so hard and came back strong this year and they should be proud.''

Next up is the third round against the winner of Tuesday night's game between Pasadena and undefeated Cypress, the defending state champion. Should Pasadena score the upset, it would face the Cougars at COC on Friday. If Cypress wins, it would stay home to play COC.
