``He ran up and stopped a gardening truck and grabbed a log (from it)... and shattered the window (of the car) and dragged the lady out and then smoke started pouring out of the window,'' said Oak Park salesman Glen Fry, who was driving about 200 yards behind the Acura Integra when it overturned.

``She was screaming and crying and he dragged her out to the middle of the road,'' he said. ``I've never seen such a thing because that car was so mangled ... He risked his life and saved the girl's life, and if he didn't do that it might have exploded or something.''

Officials said the driver of the Acura, Lisa Squeo, 31, was wearing her seatbelt and suffered only minor injuries in the noontime noon·time

 and released.

Officials said they did not know what caused Squeo's car to flip over near the Tapo Canyon Boulevard exit.

Fry said other motorists stopped after the accident but were unsure what to do. At that point, a man dressed in a black suit and driving a black Ford Explorer stopped and pulled Squeo from her car, which had come to rest on its roof in the center divider.

Squeo could not be reached for comment.

Simi Valley police Sgt. Karl Becker said he was patrolling the area when he happened on the scene and heard the unidentified Good Samaritan recounting his story to a California Highway Patrol officer and saw the wood the man said he used to break the window.

``It looked like a yule log you put on your fireplace,'' said Becker. ``He sounded like a nice guy who just stopped to help out.''

spokesman said he had heard Squeo had been helped from the car but could not immediately provide the identity of the Good Samaritan, whom witnesses described only as white and about 30 years old.

Two CHP vehicles and four fire vehicles, including an ambulance, responded to the call.
