WOMAN HASN'T RESTED ON LAURELS.

Byline: BETTIE RENCORET

LANCASTER - From the time Emma Kruetel arrived in Lancaster in 1956 she has been involved in community service through both personal and organizational activities.

Her volunteerism has earned her numerous awards and plaudits, such as being named Woman of the Year by the Women's Division of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce in 1983.

She was named Woman of the Year by the Antelope Valley This article is about the Los Angeles County region. For the census-designated place in Wyoming, see Antelope Valley-Crestview, Wyoming.

from 1972 to 1985; and as charter director of the Agencies Council for Emergency Services emergency services Emergency care '…services …necessary to prevent death or serious impairment of health and, because of the danger to life or health, require the use of the most accessible hospital available and equipped to furnish those services'  (ACES).

She chaired the United Way energy assistance program and served as treasurer for the Lancaster United Methodist Church United Methodist Church, in the United States, religious body formed by the union in 1968 of the Evangelical United Brethren Church and the Methodist Church (see Methodism).  and the United Methodist Women.

``I used to do a lot of public speaking in the early days,'' said Kruetel, who from 1956 to 1986 was credit manager, office manager and corporate secretary for Aven's Furniture Co. on Lancaster Boulevard. ``I always did everything I could to help educate consumers in the intelligent use of credit. I spoke to classes at the high schools, lectured at seminars and even did a series of monthly classes at the shelter on how to handle money.''

Among her accomplishments was the organization in 1956 of the local chapter of Credit Women International, later known as Credit Professionals of Antelope Valley.

``I brought the idea for the group with me from Van Nuys where they had an active chapter,'' Kruetel said. ``I was not only a charter member of the new group but I served as its president from 1956 to 1962, then again from 1979-1980.''

Born in the small Kansas town of Michigan Valley - which she described as ``a wide spot in the road. Two blinks of your eyes and you'd miss it'' - she came to Van Nuys in 1940 to join her husband, who was training at Lockheed Aircraft This is a list of aircraft produced or proposed by the Lockheed Aircraft Corporation from its founding as the Lockheed Aircraft Company in 1926 to its merging with Martin Marietta to form the Lockheed Martin Corporation in 1995. .

In 1942 she went to work in material control for Timm Aircraft in Van Nuys. ``They built a little wooden Navy trainer at that time,'' she said. ``Women really had their first big chance to go to work in those war years. Anyone who wanted a job could get one.''

She admits it wasn't all that easy for her. In order to get her job at Timm she had to have a physical examination. Always petite, she also had a heart problem so she couldn't pass. But she wanted desperately to work.

``They finally hired me because I was so insistent. When I tried later for another defense job, I couldn't talk my way in so I went to work in a furniture store in Van Nuys,'' she said. ``I didn't have to have a physical for that.''

Her first marriage ended in divorce, and in 1976 - after her children were fully grown - she married Joe Kruetel, a machinist. After he retired from General Electric in 1984 they opened a machine shop which is still in operation.
