Byline: Orith Goldberg Staff Writer

An 87-year-old woman died from injuries she suffered in an explosion at the Motion Picture & Television Fund retirement community earlier this week, authorities said Thursday.

Josephine Codd, who was badly burned in Monday's explosion, died Wednesday of respiratory failure Respiratory Failure Definition

Investigators are still looking into what caused Codd's cottage at the home to burst into flames.

, which oversees retirement homes, said his agency is gathering information and records about what happened while awaiting the conclusion of the Fire Department's investigation.

``If they are found at fault, we would have to take a look at what kind of action we would take,'' he said. ``You have to understand whether it was an act of someone being negligent.''

State documents show the home was cited for a ``repeat deficiency'' last year when two water heaters in other cottages were set above 120 degrees. The records say that incident called for a $150 civil fine, but the disposition of that action was immediately unclear.

Home documents show that Codd complained of a gas smell in her cottage in the weeks leading up to the explosion. A week before the incident, a home maintenance worker re-lit her wall heater and noted on a form that it ``is working great.''

Carol Pfannkuche, spokeswoman for the retirement community, said both staff members and residents there were ``deeply saddened by this accident.''

Codd was a retired nurse from 20th Century Fox, officials said.

``We are deeply sorry to hear of the passing of Josephine Codd,'' Pfannkuche said. ``Our heartfelt sympathy goes out to her family and friends. She has been an important part of the MPTF MPTF Motion Picture & Television Fund

Pfannkuche said residents and staff will be remembering Codd in private memorial services, adding that a prayer service for Codd was held Thursday morning.
