There is no evidence the driver tried to slow down before hitting the woman, he said.

The driver, a local resident about 50 years old, may face manslaughter manslaughter, homicide committed without justification or excuse but distinguished from murder by the absence of the element of malice aforethought. Modern criminal statutes usually divide it into degrees, the most common distinction being between voluntary and  and hit-and-run charges, said Officer Mike Edmonson of Valley Traffic.

Witnesses said the pedestrians - a woman in her mid-20s, a girl about 6 years old and a 20-month-old boy in a stroller - were crossing Nordhoff south on Cedros in the crosswalk. The driver was westbound on Nordhoff.

The boy was airlifted to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Zaboski said.
