Exporter of the Year Newly instituted in 1993, the WMIA Exporter of the Year Award is given to any U.S. woodworking company which has had outstanding success in exporting American-made wood products. "The Exporter of the Year Award joins the WMIA Innovator and Educator of the Year Awards as a part of the association's efforts to bring industry-wide recognition to individuals, institutions and companies which demonstrate leadership in the woodworking field," said Derda." "We believe it is extremely important to call attention to woodworking firms who are taking the risks inherent with entering global markets and in so doing are able to expand production and create and retain jobs for American woodworkers," Derda adds. In addition to the Exporter of the Year Award, Derda says the WMIA has increased its commitment to helping the American woodworking industry become more globally competitive by creating an Export Committee within the association. The committee is working on a program to assist companies in making overseas' connections needed to research European, Pacific Rim Pacific Rim, term used to describe the nations bordering the Pacific Ocean and the island countries situated in it. "Connections and partnerships have always been an important part of the process of expanding markets," Derda says. "Our members have been a part of the importing and exporting process for years. We understand many of the nuances and pitfalls of global marketing and can be of great assistance to our U.S. customers." To be eligible for the Exporter of the Year Award, companies must have been exporting American-made wood products for at least three years and must demonstrate a sustained commitment to export marketing. The firms should use WMIA-member equipment and be able to show that opening export markets for their products has helped their company retain and/or expand its workforce. WMIA Forms Export Committee In keeping with its commitment to help the American woodworking industry expand its markets, the WMIA Export Committee is designed to help firms get the answers and make the connections they need to plan and implement of expand exporting efforts. The committee, chaired by Hans Meier, will be comprised of WMIA members, Exporter Award winners and experts in such fields critical to exporting such as freight forwarding, marketing and finance. "Our members and their suppliers have a wealth of knowledge about importing and exporting," states Meier. "It is the intention of the WMIA Export Committee to put these connections and our collective knowledge to work for the American woodworking industry. The Committee has created an Export FAX Line within the WMIA. Companies with questions about exporting should FAX them to WMIA EXPORT at (410) 931-8111, or write to WMIA EXPORT at 5024-R, Baltimore, MD 21236. Additionally, the Committee is planning a series of white papers which will address such exporting concerns as marketing, lines of credit, market research, financing and making in-market connections. The committee is also exploring seminars, videotapes and a booklet series as part of its long range plans. "We invite woodworking companies to get in touch with us," comments Meier. "Their questions will help us decide the best course of action and help us set our priorities for future programs."
